Equipment Operator I

The role of an Equipment Operator I is a semiskilled work position including the operation of various heavy equipment including dump truck, flatbed truck, bucket truck, Skid Steers, front-end loader, chipper truck, and tractors used for City street maintenance operations. Position generally functions as part of a crew but may function independently depending upon area of assignment. Normally scheduled work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but may be subject to change based on projects or services. Employee is subject to emergency on call rotation. Overtime may be required. This is a mission critical position: Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The City Manager makes the determination on who will be required to work in times of emergency.

Essential Job Functions:

• Drives trucks transporting crews, materials, and supplies.
• Loads and unloads heavy equipment and materials.
• Operates heavy equipment performing road/street maintenance activities.
• Operates large tractor or other mowing equipment to maintain right-of-way and drainage areas.
• Assists in the hanging of overhead banners across highway.
• Places barricades and detour signs as needed for special events and road closures.
• Performs tree work from an articulating bucket truck.
• Performs basic equipment maintenance.
• At times of an emergency, performs field repair work of equipment (such as repair/replace hydraulic lines and basic field refueling operations).
• Continuous attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
• Any additional duties as assigned by the Public Works Superintendent and/or the Public Works Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operations of assigned equipment upon the highways.
• Skilled in the operation of assigned equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and diagrams.
• Ability to make emergency repairs and adjustments to equipment.
• Ability to safely operate all assigned equipment under all types of weather conditions.
• Ability to perform manual labor related to the operation of motorized equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

Typical Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required.
• Two years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy trucks, tractors or similar equipment, required.
• Driving and the operation of large trucks and construction equipment is a requirement.

Certifications/Licenses:

• Florida Class B CDL License required at time of hire.

• Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Streets Crew Leader and/or the Public Works Director.

Tasks require the ability to physically lift, push and carrying heavy objects (45 pounds and over).
• Some tasks are performed in a shop environment, where heightened awareness of surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents. Some tasks are performed in an environment with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, toxic agents. Tasks include working around moving parts, equipment, carts, and materials handling where physical risks are predictable/controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
• Essential functions are performed inside and outside with exposure to various weather conditions. Regular exposure to radiant energy, electrical energy, grease or oils, solvents, odors, noisy and dusty conditions, heights and uneven surfaces.
